What is Balm of Gilead?

An ancient soothing remedy made from the resinous buds of Cottonwood (Poplar) trees. Known for its sweet, honey-like aroma and natural analgesic properties, this salve is traditionally used to ease minor aches, soothe skin irritations, and comfort sore muscles.

I'm Sarah, and I wildcrafted the cottonwood buds for this balm from windfall trees along Kootenay riverbanks in late winter. I only harvest from naturally fallen branches—never living trees. Every jar is infused and blended by hand in my Fruitvale kitchen.

Balm of Gilead Salve
60ml Handcrafted Tin

Wildcrafted • Small-Batch • Traditional

A potent, resinous salve crafted from wild-harvested Canadian cottonwood buds, slowly infused in organic oil and blended with organic Canadian beeswax, Frankincense (Boswellia carterii & Boswellia sacra), and cedarwood essential oils. Made in reverence for the ancient healing traditions of Balm of Gilead—honoring its legacy as a cherished herbal remedy.

Traditional & Contemporary Uses

Historically, Balm of Gilead has been used to support:

  • Skin comfort for minor irritations, dryness, or rough patches.
  • Muscle and joint ease after exertion or seasonal shifts.
  • Aromatic grounding with its warm, woody-resin fragrance.

Today, herbalists and foragers value it for:

  • Outdoor skin care (hands, cuticles, or wind-chapped areas).
  • Post-activity recovery (massaged into tired muscles).
  • A natural balm for DIY herbal first aid kits.

The Glade Taught Me This

I only harvest from windfall cottonwood trees—never living ones. The Glade, a meadow I loved as a child, was logged and lost. That taught me: the forest gives generously when we listen. I don't need to harm living trees to create powerful medicine. 10% of your purchase protects ancient forests through the Canadian Ancient Forest Alliance. Read The Glade story →
