Ethical Foraging Reminder:
Before we dive into the process, it’s essential to approach foraging with respect and mindfulness. Always harvest from fallen limbs, windfall, or snowfall trees—never from live trees or plants. This ensures the ecosystem remains undisturbed and healthy. When foraging burdock root, only take what you need and leave enough for the plant to regenerate. Remember, we are stewards of the earth, and ethical foraging is a way to honor its abundance.

Now, let’s create a luxurious, therapeutic hair and scalp oil that will nourish your roots, promote hair growth, and leave you feeling deeply connected to nature. This recipe requires patience—the infusion process takes 8 weeks—but the result is a potent, aromatic blend that’s worth every moment.

Forest Crown Hair & Scalp Oil Recipe

Ingredients

Base Oils

  • 250ml MCT Coconut Oil

  • 100ml Jojoba Oil

  • 50ml Wildcrafted White Pine Oil (infused, see below)

  • 50ml Wildcrafted Burdock Root Oil (infused, see below)

Active Ingredients

  • 25ml Aloe Vera Oil

  • 15ml Vitamin E Oil

Essential Oils

  • 2.5ml Rosemary Essential Oil (approx. 50 drops)

  • 2.5ml Eucalyptus Essential Oil (approx. 50 drops)

  • 2.5ml Lavender Essential Oil (approx. 50 drops)

  • 2.5ml Peppermint Essential Oil (approx. 50 drops)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Foraging and Preparing White Pine Needles

  • Where to Forage: Look for white pine trees in forests or wooded areas. Only collect needles from fallen limbs or branches after wind or snowstorms. Never strip needles from live trees.

  • How to Prepare: Once home, gently rinse the needles to remove dirt or debris. Pat them dry with a clean towel. Chop the needles into smaller pieces to release their aromatic oils.

2. Foraging and Preparing Burdock Root

  • Where to Forage: Burdock grows in disturbed soils, often near trails or open fields. Look for its distinctive large, heart-shaped leaves and burr-like seed heads. Dig carefully around the plant to harvest the root.

  • How to Prepare: Wash the root thoroughly to remove soil. Chop it into small pieces or grate it to increase surface area for infusion.

3. Infusing the Oils

  • White Pine Infusion:

    1. Place the chopped white pine needles in a clean, dry glass jar.

    2. Pour 50ml of MCT coconut oil over the needles, ensuring they are fully submerged.

    3. Seal the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark place for 8 weeks. Shake the jar gently every few days to encourage infusion.

  • Burdock Root Infusion:

    1. Place the chopped or grated burdock root in a clean, dry glass jar.

    2. Pour 50ml of jojoba oil over the root, ensuring it is fully submerged.

    3. Seal the jar tightly and store it in a cool, dark place for 8 weeks. Shake the jar gently every few days.

4. Straining the Infused Oils

After 8 weeks, strain the infused oils using a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Squeeze out every last drop of oil from the plant material. Discard the used needles and root.

5. Blending the Oil

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the infused white pine oil, infused burdock root oil, remaining MCT coconut oil (200ml), and remaining jojoba oil (50ml).

  2. Add the aloe vera oil and vitamin E oil. Stir thoroughly to combine.

  3. Carefully measure and add the essential oils: rosemary, eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint. Stir gently to avoid evaporating the volatile compounds.

6. Bottling and Storing

Transfer the finished oil into dark glass bottles (amber or cobalt blue) to protect it from light degradation. Label the bottles with the ingredients and date. Store in a cool, dark place.
